If you're developing your own apiary. Here are some useful suggestions to get you started...
Keep hives away from roads and busy areas used by people and/or livestock.
If you are in a public area, display a sign to let others know about the presence of your bees - "Watch out! Bees about!"
Conceal the hives and elevate the bee's flight path by erecting fences or planting hedges. These structures will also help the bees from prevailing winds during Autumn and Winter and the scorching sunshine during the Summer months.
Create a planting scheme in your apiary. Bees use landmarks to find their way around - a few thoughtfully placed shrubs, will help your bees find their way home.
Think about how your bees will be perceived by the general public - avoid situating them in locations where adverse interactions could arise.
Ensure that your bees have a source of water. This will minimise water collection visits to potentially less than impressed neighbours!
Maintain gentle colonies. If bees become aggressive, consider re-queening with a more docile strand of bee.
Do those weekly checks!!! Manage hives for swarm prevention.
Offer your neighbours a few jars of honey and some beeswax candles
Share your knowledge and information about bees with others. You'll be surprised how interested people are.
